t an altitude of 2000 m, TREEFERNS TROUT LODGE lies between the hills and mountains of the Eastern Escarpment of Mpumalanga. The “Witrand” with its well-known FM tower, forms part of the farm, and offers a panoramic view of Dullstroom, Machadodorp, Waterval Boven, and the Lowveld by day, and sometimes Lydenburg’s glow on clear nights.

Visible from far the FM tower on the farm offers a clear beacon to the farm. It is also the site of several stone trenches dating from the Anglo-Boer War, and the Battle of Vlakfontein a description of which is also available on this web site.

Welcome to TREEFERNS Trout Lodge

for peace, service and hospitality

A prime fly fishing resort Treeferns Trout Lodge is centrally situated in the MPUMALANGA “trout triangle”  between Belfast, Dullstroom, Waterval-Boven and Machadodorp. Each  of  these  towns  lies  about  20 km  from  the   farm  and  can be reached by well-maintained roads.

From Johannesburg and Pretoria, the trip to Belfast takes no longer than an easy 2 – 2½ hours and 1 hour from Nelspruit and vicinity . (see road map, and maps showing surrounding towns).  GPS  co-ordinates are 25°34’32.6 S ; 30°10’47.5 E.

The facilities consist of 5 self catering chalets, a thatched lapa for get-togethers and group events complete with ablution and DSTV. Catering can be arranged. Twelve  dams and weirs are monthly stocked with trout for superb fly fishing.  Fly fishing tuition is available on request. Opportunities also exist for hiking, farm tours, 4×4 driving, mountain biking, sight-seeing, and birding.

TREEFERNS TROUT LODGE took its name from the many treeferns which are indigenous to the farm of which a large number is estimated to be many years old.
